Indeed Harriet, using the backward design process emphasizes awareness of new information and ability to articulate general concepts, understanding the modeling demonstrations involved in order to describe actions acquired, skills acquisition through practice with feedback in the simulated situations and skills application in real life situations under coaching.
Bearing in mind the project goal when designing training is critical for impact. This is the backward training design. The activities during training should benefit the trainees ie. have impact. This means that the skills learned can be adopted and practiced. In addition, face to face method of training should be maximised . demonstrations, hand on activities, recording a video /power point presentation that is shared for stakeholders to view at their own time etc enhances the impact of the training
