Title of Project: Avoid the TRAP: Multi-sector collaboration between health, education and environment to minimize impact of traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) on children in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, 2021-2022
Sector: Air pollution
Country: Vietnam
Lead Institution: University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City
Co-PI Institution: N/A
Partner(s): Live & Learn, D&L Technology Integration and Consulting JSC and RTI International
Final Budget: $ 133,544.00
Project Length: 24 months
Research Objective:
To minimize the impact of traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) on children
Project Description:
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that there are approximately 60,000 deaths each year in Vietnam due to air pollution, and up to 70% of the total air pollution is from the transportation sector. Such data have demonstrated the danger of being exposed to air pollution caused by transportation or traffic-related air pollution (TRAP).
Children are a vulnerable population group and are often exposed to high levels of TRAP while travelling to and from school in urban settings. However, very little data on the health effects of TRAP in Vietnamese children are available, which hinders the development of appropriate policies to minimize TRAP and the exposure to TRAP in children. We aim to target this research gap by developing evidence-based products to promote community engagement in protecting school children from a high level of exposure to TRAP.
