Module introduction: Having completed a diagnosis of the leadership challenges in our Higher Education Institutions, the next step is to identify possible actions to address these challenges. Addressing such challenges however requires leadership. This module examines the competencies that make one ready to lead a research team to overcome challenges, as well as the preparations needed by the individual to be able to lead others. Knowing oneself is a pre-requisite to identifying gaps in one’s competencies to lead, as is knowing one’s circle of influence. The module then examines the common elements of a successful university research ecosystem, which then enables the participants to examine their own institutional research ecosystems to identify possible actions to improve them. The module therefore concludes with detailed planning exercises in which participants select possible actions to address the ecosystem gaps earlier identified.
Module outline:
- Session 3.1: Getting ready to lead
- Session 3.2: The elements of a successful University Research Ecosystem
- Session 3.3: Planning Activity 1: Focusing – Identifying actions to address Research Ecosystem challenges/gaps
- Session 3.4: Planning Activity 2: Focusing – Identifying actions to increase relevance to Development Research stakeholders
Curriculum
- 10 Sections
- 9 Lessons
- 2 Weeks
- Pre-activity 3: Opinion Poll1
- Module 3.1Introduction: Leadership starts with an individual taking a decision to lead others. In order to tale this step, potential leaders need to start by understanding their own self and what drives them. By understanding themselves, leaders are able to identify gaps in their own readiness to lead, for which they can take remedial actions to improve their readiness. Leaders also need to develop the motivation to lead as well as a system of values that guides their leadership styles. In this session, we focus on how the individual gets ready to lead.1
- Module 3.2Introduction: In the previous sessions, we have seen that LMIC HEIs are faced with many challenges. These challenges need to be identified, assessed, and understood so that leaders can take actions to address them. In the next session, we shall link these challenges to leadership actions that need to be undertaken. We shall start by examining the four key practices of a leader. Thereafter, we shall examine the ingredients of a well-functioning research leadership ecosystem, guided by the 9 core ecosystem components (Elements of a successful research ecosystem). These ingredients will then guide you in identifying and prioritizing which actions need to be undertaken in your own institution.1
- Module 3.31
- Module 3.41
- Module 3.5Introduction: Now that we have completed a gap analysis on your own institution, we would like you to go through this activity in which you identify possible actions that your institution needs to undertake to address the gaps/challenges that you have identified in the previous gap analysis (Diagnostic Activity 2) under each of the 9 ecosystem components.1
- Module 3.6Introduction: In the previous activity, we identified actions needed to address the research ecosystem gaps identified in an earlier ecosystem diagnostic activity. In this session, we continue with the identification of intervention actions, but this time focusing on how to address gaps in your institution’s relevance to external stakeholders. This will be based on the gaps identified in Diagnostic Activity 3.1
- Module 3.71
- Module 3.81
- Module 3.91

Question number 4 of the quiz is very confusing………….
Sufficiently and successfully completed module 3 to night. I go through with a lot of provoking and thoughtful sessions. More so a challenging practical/activities where interacted. There is a professional tools which we can transfer to our institutions for the implementation purpose. There is a lot of work waiting a head of us within our institutions.
A great motivating Introduction
Good introduction
What an intersesting module to look into my school and University at large!
I am not sure why it reads 8/9 completed as I went through the lessons again and all the sections seems to be completed!
